If you’re  a bit down about starting the new school term, maybe it’s time to think creatively. Don’t think of that long row of metal lockers as your prison sentence—think of it as an empty canvas. Decorating school lockers means always having a small corner of the school that belongs to you, and expresses your personality and no one else’s. Make it your happy place.

Here are some ideas to get you and your friends started decorating those school lockers. You can do it as a group, or do it on your own. Be sure to ask the appropriate people if it’s okay to decorate them, and what materials are okay to use and what are not.

The best place to start is to choose a theme. Maybe you like nature? Or maybe you have a thing for cars, vampires, or a favourite TV show?

Choose something appropriate for a background. This can be as simple as covering the inside of the locker with coloured paper, or something as complex as drawing or painting a picture to put in the back. If you want a nature theme, you could put a big paper tree in the back and make the branches extend to the sides of the locker and the door. In every school locker having a place to store pens and pencils is definitely something that is needed. You can buy magnetic pencil holders which are nice, but what is better than DIY locker accessory. Making a pencil holder for your student’s school locker can add personal flair. I will show you how to put to use one more time, those old worn-out jeans that your child has outgrown with this denim pocket magnet project.

With a few simple supplies that can be purchased from your local craft store like Michaels, AC Moore, Hobby Lobby or JoAnn’s or you can find them online at Walmart, Amazon, or Target. Here’s what you will need.

Old pair of jeans 
Small round craft magnets 
Hot glue gun 
Rhinestones 
Flower patches 
A pair of scissors

Using the scissors cut out the pocket from the jeans leave the material on the back of the pocket intact. You want the pocket to remain as a pocket once you cut it out from the jeans. Trim any frayed material from the edges with the scissors.

Using a warm iron, iron on the flower patches and then use the glue gun to affix the rhinestones in a desired design. Some ideas for using the rhinestone are around the perimeter like an outline or even straight across the pocket. Allow ample time for the rhinestones to dry. When they are completely dry turn the pocket over and use the hot glue gun to affix the magnets to the four corners of the pocket.

This is a really neat idea. You can get even more creative and make one for pens and one for pencils and add more flair to your student’s locker. This is one of those girly locker accessories that you just can’t buy in the store.

The start of the new school year is arriving shortly and I am sure the list of back to school supplies is increasing by the day. Most teachers, during the first week of school, provide specific lists of supplies needed for each class. In addition to class supplies, gym supplies, and locker accessories are also needed. Here are three basics supplies that will be needed for a school locker.

Disinfectant Wipes

First and most important thing to be done, before anything is put inside of the locker, is to clean and disinfect it. Most schools janitorial staff that clean the lockers, at some point during the summer break, may just do a topical cleaning and sticker residue, food crumbs or simply dust may very well, be left behind. Use disinfectant wipes to clean the insides of the locker. Additionally, the wipes can also be used to wipe the outside of the locker door and handle. The cleanup can be done quickly however, if the condition of the locker appears as if the cleanup cannot be completed with a couple of wipes, the school office should be notified.

Air Fresheners

After the locker is disinfected and it is now nice and clean, a nice fragrance will put the icing on the cake. There are several types of air fresheners available but the easiest way to give a nice aroma to the locker would be to use the type that can be affixed to the door or wall of the locker. Check local supermarkets or variety stores in the air fresheners section where a wide array of scents can be found.

Combination Locks

Sad but true, theft in schools does occur. Securing belongings and valuable is a must. Some school lockers have locks built into them but other do not. In the case there is not a built in lock on the locker, a combination lock must be purchased. Most combination locks have a code consisting of three or four digit series of numbers and there are even some available that allow a personal code to be set. This code should be written down in two or three different places in case it is forgotten and never given out to friends.

For example, it is a great place to store extra clothing the school should have on hand in case a child has an accident or somehow gets messy. Items brought for “show and tell” can also be stored in the child’s locker. An extra jacket or sweatshirt for the surprising cool day will allow a child to enjoy the outdoors and, of course, can be kept in the child’s locker. In order to identify a child’s locker, many preschools place the child’s name on the locker in large letters. Children typically learn to read their own names first and to recognize the letters in their names. Having the child’s name on the locker not only clarifies which locker belongs to whom for preschool staff and parents, but it also helps children to develop the critical skill of literacy.

For many children, preschool is their first experience with large groups of other people and with being away from home for a period of time. In such situations, children need to know that the locker is their own special place for their very own things. For children who are insecure, security items such as special toys or blankets can be stored in the locker where they are accessible when the child needs them. Of course, preschool children cannot be counted upon to remember to tell their parents about important papers such as field trip permission slips. Teachers can place papers that need to go home with a child in the child’s lockers and parents can be instructed to check the locker for papers and such when they pick up their children.

Also, a child’s artwork that is ready to go home can be stored in the locker until parents pick it up. Each locker could even have a clipboard with notes about upcoming events or things that happened that day so parents could have that information available easily. As children move through their schooling in elementary, middle, and high school, they will have lockers. The preschool locker helps them to learn basic locker etiquette, such as respecting another child’s ownership of his or her locker. Lockers give children safe places to put their treasures. They give parents and teachers a place to communicate when school events prevent the possibility of talking together. They support children’s efforts in learning to read. And they give children opportunities to take responsibility for keeping track of their coats, boots, artwork, and other things.
